We all know that our community faces a serious public health crisis. The coronavirus pandemic has provided an opportunity to re-envision Race With A View, originally scheduled for May 3. We hope to re-schedule the live event later this year as conditions permit.
What has not changed is that now, more than ever, our community needs access to affordable mental health counseling and social services. JFCS is here, continuing to provide counseling using a telehealth model for both existing and new clients. Our social work team is checking in by phone with seniors who use our services to provide a few minutes of socialization while ensuring that they have food, medicine, and other essentials. Volunteers are running errands to deliver necessary items. We are also teaming up with the Long Beach Health Department and other community organizations to help them reach out to the many seniors they serve.
To keep our tradition of recognizing the month of May as National Mental Health Awareness Month, we are changing the May event to a month-long virtual race. Beginning immediately participants can register as usual at racewithaview.com, and then any time between May 1 and May 31, go for a walk or a run, outside or indoors on a treadmill. Create a team of registered friends and family members and remember to observe all social distancing guidelines. Walk any distance you choose along any route you like. Upload your time to the race website, and post your activity and photos on social media in support of JFCS and access to mental health services for all.
The Early Bird Registration is $30 per person and the deadline is May 5. After May 5, registration is $35. Students ages 18-22 pay $20; teams of 3-10 pay $25 per person and can register at these rates at any time. Our Family Plan is children 17 or under are free with a paying adult. T-shirts and finisher medals will be available for pick-up in June, and all participants will be notified by email of the dates and times they will be available. Participants in Virtual Race With A View will automatically be registered to participate in the live event with no additional fee and will fulfill qualification requirements for the Long Beach Trifecta 5K/10K Series for Good.
